Marinus Link is a proposed interconnector that would facilitate transmission between Tasmania and the mainland. North West Transmission Developments is a once in a generation upgrade of overhead transmission lines, substations and switching stations in north-west Tasmania, being progressed by TasNetworks to facilitate transmission to Marinus Link.

Background

Project aim

pitt&sherry were engaged to undertake a traffic risk assessment which includes assessing the risks of the project related construction vehicles to the operation, condition and safety of the public road network across Tasmania as well as assessing risks during the project's operational life and decommissioning.

What we did

An extensive assessment was completed. A framework was developed to assess the risk of adding project-related traffic to the road network based on several factors including, sight distance, road width, road condition, speed limit and other hazards and items of interest.

A list of mitigation measures was developed to address each of the identified risks, as many of the risks identified were observed in several locations, these mitigation measures were streamlined so that similar approaches could be applied across the project.

Following this, any item that initially had a risk level identified as higher than "low" had a minimum of one mitigation measure applied to reduce the level of risk.

Outcomes

The resultant levels of risk were determined after mitigation.

All findings of the assessment were provided in the form of a report and issued to the relevant road authorities (Councils and Department of State Growth).
