Project aim

The aim was to mitigate risk associated with high emissions of operational assets for the council. Particularly methane related emissions in their waste centre. The project would identify priority areas of concern, material impact to council (environmental, social and economic) and risk mitigation strategies.

What we did

Adapting to the Carbon Tax pitt&sherry performed a detailed analysis of the carbon footprint of the Launceston City Councils (LCC) operations resulting mainly from methane production at the LCC waste centre. Our analysis was intended to deal with new legislative changes created by alterations in Federal Government policy. We analysed the split between legacy and non-legacy waste streams and the anticipated future production of methane and hence carbon liabilities for the council. Our analysis extended to the financial implications of these under a carbon tax regime and recommendations for dealing with (reducing) the impact on council budgets through increased use of the methane for power generation.
